The Trip

I left Boston on September 27, 2012 – the day which would have been my father’s 90th birthday. I flew Boston to Paris, overnight, then day flight to Bahrain, a long layover and then another night and morning flight; arriving in Bangkok on September 29th.

I spent the next three months tracing my father’s life through Southeast Asia – from the hills of Laos (where the picture above was taken) to the streets of Ho Chi Minh City where my father often visited before it fell.

The hospital in Singapore

I made it to Singapore in time to stand outside Mt. Elizabeth Hospital on the 28th anniversary of his death and then I went into Burma.

It was in Burma that my eyes were opened to what my father saw – because the sad benefit of the years of military rule was that nothing had really changed. In Bangkok, my father’s old haunts were long gone – bull dozed over years before I made it there.

But in Burma it was different. I almost immediately found my father’s old house – it looked much like it did when he lived there. I had the chance to meet Aung San Sui Kyi as well and we shared memories of my father – she had grown up next to him.

I left Burma for Christmas but returned in January 2013 and I was there till April.
